General Practice EPR National Gudelines Issued

These guidelines have been drawn up in response to changes in the law, custom and practice that have arisen since paperless general practice was legitimised in 2000. Issued in July 2005 they supersede the 2000 and 2003 editions. The guidelines concentrate on addressing the issues that have recently arisen as queries to and from the Department of Health, the NHS Connecting for Health programme in the NHS (NPfIT), PCOs, GP system user groups, the Joint GP IT Committee and its parent bodies since the last version was published in 2003.

The main purpose of the guidelines is to provide a framework within which general practices can move from paperbased patient records to electronic patient records. It is intended as a source of authoritative guidance for practices, primary care organisations and other organisations supporting or advising general practices in the development and use of electronic patient records.

It is believe that practices, PCOs and others with an interest in this area can use this document as a foundation for the development of an e-commerce culture in UK primary care.
